Born Moses Harry Horwitz in June, 1897, Moe was the undisputed leader of the act.
When Moe was young, his mother let his hair grow out into long curls. Tired of getting his ass kicked, he cut it himself, into the bowl cut for which he became famous. He developed an interest in the theater at an early age, often skipping school to go and watch whatever was playing. He dropped out of high school to pursue his dream.
In 1921, he joined Ted Healy’s act and was soon joined by his brother Shemp and Larry fine; this was the first incarnation of the Three Stooges. A disagreement over pay with Healy led Moe, Larry and Shemp to strike out on their own as “Howard, Fine & Howard”, but they rejoined with Healy later. Shemp left the act for a career in films and Moe suggested their younger brother Jerome (Curly) to fill in. Healy went his own way, dropping the Stooges and ended up pretty much disappearing, while they went on to glory.
