Years after their father disappears, a young teenager searches the cosmos with the help of some extraordinary friends.
I had read the novel when it first came out, then had promptly forgotten it. I reread it recently and remembered why. This film is just as forgettable. As an adaptation, it faintly follows the novel, diverting a couple of times to show off some not-so-very-special effects. Mindy, Reese and Oprah are pretty much wasted, spending a lot of scenes just mugging at the camera. No attempt was made to improve on the story; in fact, I think they made it worse by rushing through some of the deeper tones the book attempted to explore.
I cannot recommend this one, although very young kids might like it. There are no post-credit scenes, so tesser out as soon as they start to roll.
