After escaping from a life of oppressive poverty on Correlia, Han’s journey leads him to a group of mercenaries whose schemes never go as planned.
This was fairly enjoyable, with some excellent performances from most everyone involved. I particularly like Bettany as the suave but high-strung leader of the Crimson Dawn and Suotamo was an excellent Chewbacca. The special effects and score worked together to keep things rolling and Howard came through with keeping the pacing even.
However, there were a couple of scenes that were mainly just a light show and a bit of a rip-off of The Phantom Menace. (Remember the trip through the center of the planet? You will.) And a lot of the plot seemed very contrived, as if they felt they had to go through and force this to fit into the canon. Finally, a lot of the film was very murky for some reason, especially the first scenes.
I’ll give this a mild recommendation. I did see it in 3-D and cannot recommend this, as a lot of the movie was dim anyway and the glasses made it very hard to see anything. There are no mid or post credit scenes, so pilot yourself out when they start to roll.
