Having been sent to this house to explain the tenets of the Chruch of Latter Day Saints with the resident within, what these two proselytizers don’t know is that there is a more sinister scenario awaiting them, as Mr. Reed decides to teach them The Truth.
The first half or so of this movie is all tension-building dialog and it works, due greatly to Hugh Grant’s ever increasing menace. The transition to…something else is natural and and even more chilling every moment. This is Hugh Grant at his finest. Thatcher and East were excellent as the the missionaries who start to realize that they might be in trouble. The score was subtle and served more to capture the mood than to make you notice it. The soundtrack was sparse, just a couple of songs (one sung by Sophie Tucker).

I didn’t recognize Topher Grace until the credits outed him.

However, there are a couple of plot holes and some stuff I did not understand, but that might be me. And the last five minutes or so were hard to buy into; again, that might just be me.

I’ll recommend this one. I would definitely NOT take the kiddies; they’ll not have sweet dreams. There are no scenes after the credits start rolling, so it’s safe to backslide on out.
